Agusta Savage

Remembering Agusta Savage: Gifted sculptor, activist, educator. Luminary of the Harlem Renaissance, she guided and inspired artists such as Jacob Lawrence, and Norman Lewis. She lobbied the WPA on behalf of African-American artists, and helped to found the Harlem Artists' Guild. This led to a directorial position at the WPA's Harlem Community Center, which offered art instruction for all kinds of students. Best known for her portrait sculpture (DuBois & Garvey, among them), and her exquisite renderings of Black Life filled with dignity and glory. Born in Florida, Feb. 29, 1892, she passed away in New York on March 26, 1962 having inspired generations of gifted artists, and committed cultural activists.
